Hyaluronic Acid: what are its benefits for the skin?

We use hyaluronic acid for its hydrating, plumping and smoothing properties. Naturally present in the skin, it helps retain water and improve the appearance of dehydration lines, leaving the skin looking fresher, softer and more supple.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule naturally found in the skin. Its main role is to bind water and help maintain tissue hydration.

In skincare, hyaluronic acid is used for its strong water-retaining capacity. It can hold many times its own weight in water, which makes it especially useful for skin that feels dehydrated, tight or lacking in comfort.

Despite its name, hyaluronic acid is not an exfoliating acid. It does not act like glycolic acid, lactic acid or salicylic acid. It is a hydrating ingredient, not a peeling ingredient.

Hyaluronic acid helps hydrate the skin.

One of the main reasons we use hyaluronic acid is its ability to attract and retain water.

It acts as a humectant. This means it helps draw moisture into the upper layers of the skin and keeps the skin surface feeling hydrated.

When the skin is well hydrated, it appears smoother, softer and more comfortable. The complexion can also look fresher and less tired.

Hyaluronic acid helps plump the appearance of the skin.

Dehydrated skin often looks less full. Fine lines may appear more visible, especially around the eyes, mouth and forehead.

Hyaluronic acid helps improve this appearance by increasing the feeling of hydration in the skin’s surface layers. The skin can look more plump, supple and elastic.

It does not change facial volume or act like injectable hyaluronic acid. In skincare, its effect is topical: it helps the surface of the skin look smoother and better hydrated.

Hyaluronic acid helps smooth dehydration lines.

Fine lines are not always caused by ageing. Some are linked to temporary dehydration.

When the skin lacks water, small lines can become more visible. Hyaluronic acid helps reduce this appearance by improving surface hydration.

The result is skin that looks smoother, more rested and more comfortable.

Hyaluronic acid supports skin comfort.

Dehydrated skin can feel tight, especially after cleansing or exposure to cold, wind or dry air.

We use hyaluronic acid to help restore comfort without adding heaviness. It brings hydration without the richness of an oil or butter, which makes it suitable for many textures, from light serums to creams and masks.

It is especially useful when the skin needs water rather than lipids.

Hyaluronic acid helps improve skin suppleness.

Supple skin is skin that feels flexible, soft and comfortable.

By helping the skin retain water, hyaluronic acid supports this feeling of suppleness. It helps the skin surface feel less dry and less rigid.

This makes it useful in daily formulas designed to keep the skin fresh, hydrated and comfortable throughout the day.

Is hyaluronic acid suitable for all skin types?

Hyaluronic acid is suitable for many skin types.

Dry skin benefits from its hydrating effect. Oily and combination skin can use it because it brings water without adding oil. Sensitive-feeling skin often tolerates it well when the complete formula is gentle.

It is particularly useful for dehydrated skin. Dehydration can affect any skin type, including oily skin.

As always, the effect depends on the full formula, not on one ingredient alone.

How do we use hyaluronic acid in skincare?

We use hyaluronic acid in formulas where the skin needs hydration, freshness and comfort.

It combines well with ingredients such as glycerin, panthenol, vitamin B3 and aloe vera. It can also be paired with nourishing ingredients such as plant oils or squalane, especially when the skin needs both water and lipids.

In a skincare routine, hyaluronic acid is usually used after cleansing. It works particularly well when followed by a cream or nourishing formula that helps preserve the hydration it provides.

Are there any precautions to take?

Hyaluronic acid is generally well tolerated.

However, very dehydrated skin may not feel fully comfortable with hyaluronic acid alone. Because it is a water-binding ingredient, it works best in a complete formula that also helps reduce moisture loss.

If the air is very dry, or if the skin barrier is weakened, it is useful to apply a moisturizer after a hyaluronic acid product.

As with any cosmetic ingredient, very reactive skin should test a new product on a small area before applying it more broadly.

In brief.

We use hyaluronic acid for its hydrating, plumping and smoothing properties. It helps attract and retain water in the skin’s surface layers, improving comfort, suppleness and the appearance of dehydration lines.

Light, effective and suitable for many skin types, it is especially valuable for skin that feels tight, dehydrated or lacking in freshness.
